What a Weekend!

I'm sure by now most of you have heard about the devastating tornadoes that came through North Carolina on Saturday. Thankfully, we are safe and our house is unharmed, but that is not the case for many people in the area. So many homes and business were lost, people injured and killed. If you haven't seen the damage on the news, here is a short NY Times slideshow. I think the most shocking picture for me is the last one, which is the Lowe's that was damaged. I drove by there probably twice a week for the last 2 months on my way to the chiropractor, and to see it leveled like that is just scary. Please keep those affected in your thoughts and prayers in the coming weeks, as it's going to be a long recovery for the area.

Like I said, thankfully we were safe. We did lose power for about 18 hours, and because of that we really didn't know the full extent of the damage right away. Not until we tried to go find food that night did we realize that absolutely everything was closed and without power. Well, with the exception of our local Food Lion, which was up and running on a generator. Needless to say, it was pure insanity in there, with people buying every bit of food they could grab. We settled for some turkey burgers and went home to grill. Anyway, we spent the time playing Monopoly (Eagles edition) by candlelight (I won, twice, but who's counting?). In the morning, when we still didn't have power, we gave in and tossed the food in the fridge that had gotten too warm, and cooked the bacon and eggs that were still cold. Thank goodness for a grill with a side burner! Our power came back shortly thereafter, so our survival skills could be put to rest. I may or may not have commented once or twice that it's a good thing my husband went to SERE... though he reminded me that we weren't quite at the "find a rabbit or snake, kill it and eat it" stage.  True.

Sunday, after we got power back and I could do important things like dry my hair, we ventured out and ordered our rocker/ glider for the baby's room.

I'm super excited about this purchase. Ignore the color and pattern shown, ours is in a color called "flax", which is another word for a beige/ dark tan. We have looked just about everywhere for a chair we loved that didn't break the bank, and this is perfect. I think it's a good sign when I don't want to get out of it at the store... Anyway, we've got a lot left to do with the room, but all the furniture (minus a bookcase) is purchased. One step at a time!
